Moderate Risk Level
Malaria in Brazil
Malaria risk is concentrated in the Amazon basin and rural areas of northern Brazil (Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins). Most tourist destinations — including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Brasília, and Iguazu Falls — are not in malaria zones. Anti-malarial tablets are recommended only if your itinerary includes the Amazon or rural northern regions.

Travel Health Tips for Brazil
Practical tips to help you stay safe, healthy, and prepared throughout your trip.
Travel tip 1
- Carry your Yellow Fever certificate at all times — you will need it for entry and may be asked at internal checkpoints.
Travel tip 2
- Dengue and Zika are widespread — use DEET repellent and wear long clothing, especially during the rainy season.
Travel tip 3
- If visiting the Amazon, take malaria tablets as prescribed and sleep under a treated mosquito net.
Travel tip 4
- Drink bottled water outside of major cities. Street food is generally safe when cooked fresh.
Travel tip 5
- Sun protection is essential — UV levels in tropical Brazil are extremely high year-round.
When to Get Vaccinated
Yellow Fever vaccination must be given at least 10 days before arrival (legal entry requirement). Plan 6–8 weeks ahead if you also need Rabies or Hepatitis B. We offer same-day Yellow Fever vaccination with certificate issued on the day.
Best Time to Visit
May to September (dry season in most of Brazil, Brazilian winter). Carnival is in February/March. The Amazon is best visited June to November (lower water levels, more wildlife). December to March is the rainy season — dengue risk is highest during this period.
