How long does the Yellow Fever certificate last?

The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is valid for life following a single dose. Previously the certificate was valid for 10 years, but the WHO changed this to lifetime validity in 2016.

Can I get the Yellow Fever vaccine on the same day as other vaccines?

Yes — Yellow Fever can be administered alongside most other travel vaccines in the same appointment. Our pharmacist will advise if any specific combinations need to be spaced apart.

Who should NOT get the Yellow Fever vaccine?

The vaccine is not recommended for infants under 9 months, people with severe egg allergies, those who are immunosuppressed, or pregnant women. If you fall into any of these categories, our pharmacist can discuss alternatives and provide an exemption letter if needed.

Do I need the vaccine if I already had Yellow Fever?

If you have previously had confirmed Yellow Fever infection, you are considered immune for life and do not need the vaccine. However, you may still need a certificate for border entry — our pharmacist can advise.

Yellow Fever is a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes in tropical regions of Africa and South America. While many infections are mild, severe cases can cause high fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), bleeding, and organ failure — with a fatality rate of up to 50% in severe cases. The Yellow Fever vaccine is one of the most effective vaccines available, providing lifelong protection from a single dose. At Holborn Clinic, we are an approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre designated by the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC). This means your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is recognised worldwide. Many countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination as a condition of entry, particularly if you are arriving from or transiting through an endemic area. Without a valid certificate, you may be refused entry, quarantined, or vaccinated at the border.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

Travellers visiting countries in sub-Saharan Africa or tropical South America where Yellow Fever is endemic.
Anyone transiting through a Yellow Fever risk country — some destinations require proof of vaccination even for transit passengers.
Laboratory workers who may be exposed to the Yellow Fever virus.
It is a legal entry requirement for many countries including Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Colombia, and Peru.

What to Expect

Your appointment takes approximately 15 minutes.
The vaccine is given as a single injection in the upper arm.
You will receive your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) immediately after vaccination. This yellow card is your legal proof of vaccination.
The vaccine takes 10 days to provide full protection, so plan to visit at least 10 days before departure if possible.
A free travel health consultation is included with every vaccination — our pharmacist will review your full itinerary and recommend any additional vaccines or medications you may need.

Side Effects

Mild headache, muscle aches, or low-grade fever in the first few days — affects around 1 in 4 people.
Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site — very common and resolves within a few days.
Serious side effects are extremely rare (approximately 1 in 250,000 doses). Our pharmacist will discuss these with you before vaccination.
The vaccine is not suitable for everyone — we will screen for contraindications including egg allergy, immunosuppression, and pregnancy during your consultation.
