Overview

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver. It can become chronic and lead to serious liver disease over many years. The vaccine is non-live and is given as a series of injections; completing the course gives excellent long-term protection. Risk is higher in some parts of Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe, and for anyone who might have medical or dental procedures, tattoos, or acupuncture abroad. At Holborn Clinic we review your itinerary and health history and build a schedule that works with your departure date where possible.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Long-stay travellers and people working or volunteering in healthcare settings abroad.
  • Anyone who may need medical or dental treatment in countries with higher prevalence.
  • Adventure travellers where cuts, tattoos, or body piercing may carry blood exposure risk.
  • People who have not completed a Hepatitis B course in the past.

What to Expect

  • First appointment: assessment and first dose in the upper arm.
  • Second dose usually one month later; third dose around six months after the first (schedules can be adjusted — ask our pharmacist).
  • Each visit is quick; you receive a record of doses for your travel or occupational health file.
  • If time before travel is short, accelerated schedules may be possible — we will advise what is clinically appropriate.

Side Effects

  • Very common: mild pain or redness at the injection site.
  • Common: tiredness or low-grade fever for a short time after the injection.
  • Severe reactions are rare; we monitor you and can answer any concerns before each dose.
