Overview

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is one of the most common respiratory viruses worldwide. While most RSV infections cause mild cold-like symptoms, the virus can cause severe illness in older adults, very young babies, and people with chronic heart or lung conditions. RSV vaccines are newly available in the UK. At Holborn Clinic, we offer RSV vaccination privately for adults aged 60 and over and for pregnant women from 28 weeks. The vaccine can be given alongside flu and COVID boosters for convenience.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

Adults aged 60 and over — RSV causes an estimated 14,000 hospitalisations and 8,000 deaths annually in older adults in the UK.
Pregnant women (from 28 weeks) — maternal vaccination protects the newborn through transferred antibodies during the first months of life.
Adults with chronic lung disease (COPD, severe asthma) or heart disease.
Immunocompromised adults at higher risk of severe RSV infection.

What to Expect

A single injection in the upper arm. The appointment takes approximately 15 minutes.
Ideally given before the RSV season (autumn/winter) for maximum protection.
Can be co-administered with the flu and COVID vaccines in the same visit.

Side Effects

Very common: injection site pain, fatigue, headache, muscle or joint pain.
Common: mild fever for 1–2 days.
Serious side effects are rare in clinical trials involving tens of thousands of participants.
