Overview

Pneumococcal disease is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria and can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and septicaemia. It is a leading cause of death in older adults and people with chronic health conditions. At Holborn Clinic, we provide the pneumococcal vaccine privately — no GP referral or waiting list. Our pharmacist will assess which vaccine type (conjugate or polysaccharide) is most appropriate for your age and medical history.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • All adults aged 65 and over — pneumococcal disease is more common and more serious in older adults.
  • Adults with chronic conditions — diabetes, heart disease, COPD, asthma, liver disease, kidney disease, or HIV.
  • People without a functioning spleen (asplenia) or with a weakened immune system.
  • Smokers and heavy drinkers — at increased risk of pneumococcal pneumonia.
  • Anyone who has not previously received a pneumococcal vaccine.

What to Expect

  • A single injection in the upper arm. The appointment takes approximately 10 minutes.
  • The vaccine (Prevenar 13 or PPV23 depending on clinical assessment) provides long-lasting protection from a single dose.
  • In some cases, two different pneumococcal vaccines may be recommended — our pharmacist will advise.

Side Effects

  • Very common: soreness at the injection site.
  • Common: mild fever, fatigue, or muscle aches for a day or two.
  • Serious side effects are very rare.
